Anupama Kizhakkeveettil is an Ayurvedic practitioner and licensed acupuncturist. She received her BAMS degree from India and Master Degree in Oriental Medicine from the US. She is currently pursuing her PhD in public health. She has been teaching and practicing Ayurvedic medicine over a decade. She has presented papers at national and international conferences and has authored peer-reviewed journal articles in complementary and alternative medicine. Currently she serves as Principal Investigator for a research study using an integrative approach to low back pain; and as Co-investigator for a smoking cessation study. She also serves as a peer reviewer for several journals and has participated in several international conference in the USA. Dr. Anupama received an Outstanding Researcher award in 2008 and Excellence in Research award in 2010. She also received the Ayurvedic Vachaspathi Award from AAPNA in 2010. Currently she is working as an Assistant Professor and the lead instructor for the Ayurvedic program at Southern California University of Health Sciences and is director of the Research Board at AAPNA.

Dr. (Vaidya) Ashlesha Raut is a Consulting Ayurvedic practitioner and Nutrition, Health Educator. She is a classically trained in Ayurveda M.D. from the prestigious Mumbai University in India with specialty in Rasashastra (Mineral Medicine) and Bhaishajya Kalpana (Ayurvedic Pharmaceutics). Her expertise also includes research in Ayurvedic product formulation and branding for global markets. She was a Medical Director of L’amar Natural Products (a division of CIPLA India) and Ayurvedic Advisor for Pharmaceutical companies in India. Dr. Raut was awarded a prestigious “Shiromani Award” by Indian Board of Alternative Medicines for her contributions towards the alternative medicine in the industry. Ashlesha is a General member of NAMA (National Ayurvedic Medical Association – USA), Life time member of NIMA (National Integrated Medical Association-India), and Treasurer & Executive member of AHWS (American Hindu World Services organization). Received his Bachelors degree in Ayurvedic medicine and surgery (BAMS) after completing five and a half years of training from Bangalore University. He also persued three years of education to receive Masters degree in Ayurvedic herbology from Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences. Bangalore.
Dr. Jayagopal completed Yoga teacher’s training course from Atma Darshan, Bihar School of Yoga. In addition to his twelve years of clinical experience, Dr. Jayagopal has traveled to Europe and Japan to propagate the science of Ayurveda. Currently he teaches and serves as Chair and Associate Professor in the Department of Ayurveda at the American University of Complementary Medicine (AUCM) in Beverly Hills, CA, which offers both a Clinical Doctorate (AyD) and a PhD program in Ayurveda.
In addition to the above he is also offering Ayurvedic clinical services at AUCM community clinic. Being proactive in propagating ayurveda to the community he has held seminars and educational demonstrations at various Yoga centers, senior facilities and health associations. Dr Jayagopal has presented several papers in national and international conferences. Patricia Layton, MA, CAS, PKT, E-RYT 500
Co-founder of Bhavana Institute and Director of the Ayurveda Studies Program, Pat has been training Ayurveda educators and practitioners for the past twelve years. She was introduced to Ayurveda in 1975, by her spiritual mentor and has spent her adult life studying and integrating the practices of Yoga and Ayurveda into her life.
She graduated from the California College of Ayurveda in 1997 as a Certified Ayurvedic Specialist and Panchakarma Technician, and went on to complete a Panchakarma training course in India with the International Academy of Ayurved. She has a B.S. in Natural Science from the University of Pittsburgh, and she also earned a masters’ degree in Integral Health Studies at the California Institute of Integral Studies, where her thesis was an epistemological study on how American students learn Ayurveda.
While living in San Francisco she owned and operated Yerba Buena Ayurveda, a full-service Ayurveda clinic. She also taught extensively in the Bay Area, including four years as adjunct professor at San Francisco State University; two years adjunct at the California Institute of Integral Studies; thirteen years core faculty in the Iyengar Yoga Institute’s Yoga Teacher Training Program; and five years core faculty at the California College of Ayurveda. She also taught Year One and Year Two practitioner programs at Kanyakumari Ayurveda in Milwaukee for five years.
Prior to teaching Ayurveda Patricia taught all aspects of yoga and worked as a Yoga Therapist at a Pain Clinic from 1982 to 1987. She teaches her specialties in the Bhavana Yoga Teacher Training Program – Physiology for Yoga Teachers; Sankhya Philosophy; Ethics for Yoga Teachers; Emotional Purification; Physiology of the Subtle Body; and Ayurveda for Yoga Teachers. She is a perpetual student and continues her study of both Yoga and Ayurveda in the US and India.
Patricia is known for her scholarship, humor, and incredible memory. Her extensive contact over the past 40 years with a variety of high quality teachers of both Yoga and Ayurveda in the US and India has provided her with a wealth of knowledge that she unselfishly passes on.
Dr. Bhaswati Bhattacharya, MPH,MD, AWHC, PhD Scholar (Co-Chair)
A holistic physician, educator, and activist, Dr. Bhaswati is Clinical Assistant Professor of Family Medicine/Medicine at Weill-Cornell Medical College and is completing her PhD in Rasa Shastra/ Ayurveda at Banaras Hindu University in Varanasi. She served as Director of Research at Wyckoff Heights Medical Center from 2001-2011, and as Director of the Division of CAM. She has also worked as an attending physician in family medicine, internal medicine, and ob/gyn and has been teaching medical students since 1997, guiding research, clinical, and didactic courses in medical schools for 15 years. Bhaswati was awarded as a senior Fulbright Scholar in 2013.
She has also held faculty positions at Mount Sinai School of Medicine, The Graduate Institute (CT), Sai Ayurveda College of Miami, and Georgetown University, and is the founder of The DINacharya Institute in New York. She teaches holistic medicine in her private practice (drbhaswati.com). She has over 25 years of experience in clinical research, primary care, clinical practice, and CAM medical education in academia, non-profit organizations, and the corporate world. She has served on the Board of Directors of NAMA, AAPNA, SAPHA (South Asian Public Health Association), IWGA (International Working Groups of Ayurveda-Dept of AYUSH, Government of India), and the AHMA (American Holistic Medical Association). She was the co-Principal Investigator of an NIH-funded R25 grant on CAM for medical schools in the USA.
Her academic training includes PhD work in pharmacology/ neuroscience (Columbia University), a MPH-masters in international public health (Harvard University), a MD-doctorate in allopathic medicine (Rush University of Chicago), residency training in family medicine (Columbia P&S) and in preventive & community medicine (Mount Sinai/NYU), training in nutrition (Columbia University/IIN) and holistic medical disciplines. Her ongoing training in ayurveda is both traditional - through gurukula in India since 2001, and contemporary - through ayurveda certification courses at the AYU Academy / Sai Ayurveda. Her clinical work has been featured in a documentary called Healers: Journey into Ayurveda, playing worldwide since 2003, on The Discovery Channel. She is the recipient of several awards in Ayurveda.
The Council is composed of Ayurvedic educators and practitioners, Vaidyas (Ayurvedic Physicians), Doctors (MDs).
Founding members were selected for expertise as 1) active practitioners of Ayurveda in the USA, 2) active educators in Ayurvedic educational programs in the USA, 3) background and training as Ayurvedic professionals, 4) academic training in at least two health disciplines, and 5) their ability to “play well with others.”
It is our firm belief that this work is best done by an independent group of Ayurvedic practitioners actively engaged in the field of education who have undergone thousands of hours in the milieu of education to develop their expertise.

Dr. (Vaidya) Vivek Shanbhag, BAMS, MD (Ayu), ND
served as Medical Director at Natural Medince Clinic, Seattle. His clinical, teaching and research experience spans over 18 years. He is the founder of AYU Academy, and author of Beginners Introduction to Ayurveda. He has served on the Board of Directors of NAMA and AAPNA. During 1991-96, he was Chairman of the Ayurvedic Department at Bastyr University, Seattle. During 1985-88, he was Head of Institute of Research in Ayurvedic Medicine, Poona, India. Dr. Shanbhag's 14 years of Ayurvedic and Naturopathic clinical training includes Ayurvedic graduateion (BAMS) at Karnataka University, post-graduation (MD-Ayurved) at Poona University and Doctorate in Natuopathic Medicine at Bastyr University. He was awrded the prestigious I.I.M. Gold Medal for his MD-Ayurved Research Thesis. Dr. Raut is an International Advisor to AAPNA and recipient of AAPNA’s International Dhanwantari Award 2010, for excellence in ayurvedic practice. He also received the Central Drug Research Institute, India (CDRI) award in 2007 for excellence in research for his work in ayurveda & rheumatology over the last 20 years. Dr. Raut has been engaged in several research programs & projects sponsored by government agencies and industry.
Vd. Aparna Bapat, BAMS
As the Academic Dean and senior faculty of Sai Ayurveda College of Miami, Dr. Bapat has been a dedicated educator, clinician, and consultant of Ayurveda internationally, since 1990. She studied Ayurvedic medicine and earned a BAMS at the University of Pune. She was then a Senior Lecturer at the College of Ayurveda in London. Dr. Bapat is the author of numerous articles on Ayurvedic medicine and related themes, and serves on the board of the Light on Ayurveda Journal. With over 15,000 patients, she has made multiple television appearances and is considered one of the finest teachers and practitioners of Ayurveda in the USA today. She is an expert on legal importing of Ayurvedic herbs into the USA and has been supplying companies through AyurSpirit. Dr. Bapat has served on the Board of Directors of NAMA and AAPNA, and has taught on the faculty of the New Jersey Institute of Ayurveda, the AYU Academy, Kerala Ayurveda Academy, and The DINacharya Institute, as well as dozens of yoga studios.
Vd. Vijay Singh Chauhan, BAMS, MD(Ayu)
Dr. Chauhan is an expert in the discovery, development and overseas marketing of Ayurvedic herbal products & phytopharmaceuticals and has worked with government and regulatory bodies on the information needed to educate regulators on Ayurvedic processes. He completed his BAMS and postgraduate MD in Ayurveda specializing in gynecology, at the Gujrat Ayurveda University in Jamnagar, India in June 1980, and is a master of over 5000 verses in Sanskrit. He has developed course syllabi for Ayurvedic programs in Florida and Pennsylvania, as well as an Ayurvedic course to certify allopathic doctors in Maharashtra. He is also an expert on literature, with several books of poetry.
Vd. Deepika Gunawant, BAMS, MD (Ayu)
Currently working as the Medical Director of Max Centre for Integrative Medicine in New Delhi, Dr. Gunawant is an author, former consultant to AYUSH, former UK-based Ayurvedic practitioner, and contributor to the WHO Benchmarks in Ayurveda. She also serves as an expert with the National Accreditation Board for Certification Bodies (NABCB). She earned an MD in Ayurveda from Calcutta University, and maintains a strong interest in mind-body medicine and developing clinical models in Integrative medicine, education and wellness. Her experience spans over two decades of clinical, research, teaching, marketing and regulatory work both in India and in the UK, where she served as Consultant to the MHRA (Medicines and Health Care Regulatory Agency). She was also a member of the Herbal Medicines Regulatory Working Group formed by the Department of Health, UK. In London, she was the Chief Physician and Marketing Director with the Ayurvedic Hospital and served on the faculty of the Thames Valley University for their degree course in Ayurveda. Dr. GG Gangadharan is a practicing Ayurvedic physician and has been affiliated with the Foundation for Revitalization of Local Health Traditions (FRLHT), now known as the Institute for Ayurveda and Integrative Medicine (I-AIM) based in Bangalore, India. An expert on authentic Ayurvedic methods of diagnosis, especially pulse diagnosis and treatment, he successfully treats lifestyle disorders. Dr. Joshi is a Professor of Dravyaguna at the Institute of Medical Sciences, Banaras Hindu University, in Varanasi, with nearly 30 years experience conducting research with WHO, DST and WIPO, and teaching post-graduate M.D. (Ay.) students about identification, properties, action and therapeutic uses of traditional Medicinal Plants used in Ayurveda. He has nearly 25 years of experience in the field survey of medicinal plants of the Ayurvedic classic texts from different geographical regions of India. Subhash Ranade is Chairman of the International Academy of Ayurveda in his native Pune, founded in 1996. He has been an international leader in Ayurveda education, research, and practice for the past 30 years. His teaching, collaborations, and publications have spanned 69 countries. He completed Ayurveda Acharya (B.A.M.S.) and Ayurveda Varidhi (Ph.D.) studies with honors, then served as Professor and Head of the Department of Ayurveda at Pune University for 20 years, and then was Principal of the Ashtang Ayurveda College in Pune.
Since 1981, Dr. Ranade and his wife Dr. Vd. Sunanda Ranade have been traveling worldwide as ambassadors of Ayurveda and as visiting professors at various institutes of health and Ayurveda. The pair have conducted hundreds of Ayurveda courses, in Germany, Switzerland, Italy, Holland, Spain, Hungary, Poland, Israel, Canada, Brazil and the Amazon, Chile, Argentina, Russia, Japan, Indonesia, Australia, New Zealand, and the United States. Some of their students have progressed to open Ayurveda schools and clinics. The IAA now has satellites in many other countries and has trained over 400 students. Hema Patankar is one of the founding directors of Vedika Global since its inception in 2007. Krishnakumar completed the full training in ayurveda when his father was Medical Director and Founder of the Arya Vaidya Pharmacy in Coimbatore. After training, he took charge of the AVP hospital, pharmacy, and factory. Since the mid-1970s, the AVP Group has developed an ayurvedic medical college, an allopathic medical college, several primary schools, international programs, ayurvedic ancillary therapy programs affiliated with accredited universities in Tamil Nadu, training manuals, and a range of companies related to authentic Ayurveda. His vision for Ayurveda has created the formal training of hundreds of vaidyas, and tens of thousands of patients. He was awarded one of India's most prestigious honors, the PadmaShree, in 2010.

Dr.Lad is a classically trained Ayurveda Practitioner who brings a wealth of classroom and practical experience to the United States. He received the degree of Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery (B.A.M.&S.) in 1968 from the University of Pune, India and a Master of Ayurvedic Science (M.A.Sc.) in 1980. In 1984, he founded and began as Director of The Ayurvedic Institute. Dr. Lad is the author of 11 books on Ayurveda as well as hundreds of articles and other writings. With more than 500,000 copies of his books in print in the US, his work has been translated into more than 20 languages. An alumnus of the Govt. Ayurveda College, Tripunithura, Cochin Dr.Jayarajan joined Kerala Ayurveda Pharmacy Ltd as Medical Officer at Amrutham Hospital, Aluva and KAPL Ayurvedic center at Kappad, Kozhikode.
Suffused with expertise in traditional Ayurvedic health care practices especially Panchakarma (Ayurvedic detoxification) and Ksharasoothra (medicated thread therapy) a specialty of Kerala Ayurveda tradition, Dr Jayarajan took charge as the Chief Medical Officer of an exclusive Ayurvedic wellness center - Ayurvedagram. He is currently the principal investigator of a research on integrated approach of Ayurveda and Stem cell in Duchene Muscular Dystrophy. Dr Jay ran a hugely successful “Ayurveda Summer Makeover” program in Slovenia in the Spring of 2008. A program sponsored by a fashion magazine selected 5 women from several applicants to be given a Summer Makeover with Ayurvedic treatments and therapies. A winner in all ways the program received wide attention in the press and media alike. Dr Jay has presented several papers on Ayurveda in national and international seminars. He writes articles on wellness an health regularly in periodicals and responds to the readers’ health queries in the Health issue of The New Indian Express.
